CHURCH LEADERSHIP
- INTRODUCTION
- There -not be leadership in the church just you in the home, in the
school, in the army, in the navy, in the nation - everywhere.
- Few churches are ever able to rise and grow without efficient
leadership. The members cannot rise above its fountain source.
- A better leadership is the crying need of many churches today. "What
is everybody's business is nobody's business." We need wide-awake,
zealous leadership which will get all the members to operate at full
capacity for Christ.
- FIRST OF ALL, WE NEED A NUMBER OF GOOD MEN TO SERVE AS ELDERS IN EACH CONGREGATION.
- Acts 20:28. The Holy Spirit makes elders through the Word of God,
as revealed by the Holy Spirit, just as He makes Christians. The
Word produces the right kind of men for the work, and tells us of
their qualifications, and the work which they are to do.
- Not all men in the church are equally talented and
developed. Matt. 25:14-30; 1 Pet. 2:2; Heb. 5:12. Some are only
babes in Christ, regardless of the length of time they have been in the church.
- Elders are to have certain qualifications, which, in the main, must
be desired and sought by all Christians alike. 1 Tim. 3:1-7;
Tit. 1:5-9. Above all, they should be good men, intelligent, and devoted
to the truth and the church.
- The elders are the God-ordained overseers of all the work of the
church: the work of edification, evangelism, and benevolence. Acts
20:28; 1 Pet. 5:1-3; Heb. 13:7, 17;
1 Tim. 5:17. Some who recognize
the elders as being over benevolence, object to one church sending
to another eldership in evangelism. Acts 11:27-30. It cannot be
denied that one church can aid another in evangelism. Acts 11:22; 15:22-32.
It is argued that aid for another church in evangelism must be sent directly to the
preacher. 2 Cor. 11:8. (The funds here may have been sent to the
church for Paul And that church may not have had elders at that
time.) To whom should help be sent if the church had no preacher, as
in the case of helping a church to rebuild after a cyclone I It is
not wrong for one church to send money to the elders of another
church. Acts 11:29, 30. And let us remember the elders are over all
the work of the church, including evangelism. Acts 20-28;
1 Pet. 5:1-3; 1 Thess. 5:12, 13.
It is inconsistent to say the elders are over funds sent to aid them in benevolence, and over their own funds
for evangelism, but that it is wrong for them to be over funds sent
by another church for evangelism.
- DEACONS SHOULD BE A SORT OF "STANDING COMMITTEE" FOR READY SERVICE IN THE CHURCH.
- They are to be chosen because well-qualified for their work. 1 Tim. 3:8-11; Phil. 1:1; Acts 6. They have a big job, a great work.
- Deacons are not overseers of the church.
- BECAUSE OF HIS ABILITY AND OPPORTUNITY FOR CONTACTS, THE PREACHER
IS ALSO A LEADER IN THE CHURCH WHERE HE LABORS.
- His qualifications are found in 1 and 2 Timothy, and Titus.
- He is to preach the word under the oversight of the elders. 2 Tim. 4:1-3; Mk. 16:15; Tit. 2:15. He is most of all a teacher and
proclaimer of the truth, but should do anything he can for the good of the church.
- THE PREACHER SHOULD TEACH AND TRAIN OTHERS FOR LEADERSHIP.
- 2 Tim. 2:2. Training class for leadership, for elders, deacons, song
leaders class teachers, etc. L. R, Wilson's book on CONGREGATIONAL
DEVELOPMENT is here recommended an a good textbook.
